the evolution of lingerie
From the corset to the soft bra
"cover up that bosom, which I can't endure to look on"
The famous line above was written for Molière's play Le Tartuffe in 1669.
It encapsulates the fantasies and functions binding women's breasts.
Rules of seduction, good manners, fads… Countless criteria define what women's lingerie should look like
When it changes, it shakes up all of society. That shows how important we are ladies! ;)
lingerie has changed over time
How about you, what do you want? It can be hard to tell with so many double binds out there.
Some may now prioritise comfort and freeing the cleavage we often restrain,
but others prefer sexy lingerie to showcase their feminine wiles.
The same rule applies to this and all areas of your life: your body, your choice!
Hermine Cadolle,
a woman you should know about
The feminist Hermine Cadolle invented the first bra
in 1889 to liberate women from corsets.
It was called the "corselet-gorge" then "maintien-gorge"
before the term "soutien-gorge" (literally, "hold the throat")
finally made it into the 1904 Le Larousse dictionary.
Bras were in!

PS: Why "gorge" (throat)?
Because that's what breasts were called at the time, out of modesty.
